How to Know Your Calling From God (In One Simple Step)
Here’s the Truth About Knowing Your Calling From God
I feel like Yah really did something in the How to Be Grateful in Hard Times Series, and this series is really gonna piggyback off of it. I didn’t expect it when He gave me the revelation He wanted me to share for this post, but it feels like opening the chapter of the same story and just diving deeper into a new world.
That being said, if you have not read Part I of How to Be Grateful in Hard Times, I truly suggest you stop what you’re doing here and start there. It’s gonna be referenced a lot, so you might as well. And then, once you finish the series, you’ll have a deeper understanding of some very profound concepts and you will be able to interpret what is being revealed in this post well.
Let’s dive in? I say let’s dive in.
What is Your Purpose as a Believer in Yahusha HaMashiach?
So, you wanna know your calling from God. That’s why you’re here. You got drawn by the title of this post or maybe one of the pins on Pinterest and you decided that it was clickbait-ey enough to draw you in. You have this fierce desire to know what God is calling you to do, your purpose, the meaning of your life. And honey, you are about to find it here. I promise you, however, if you’re actively looking to know what you’re called by the Elohim to do in this life, this post will not be the response that you think it is.
So let’s start with the direct answer by expounding on our founding scripture of this series:
14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
Matthew 13:14-15 KJV
So in Part II of How to Be Grateful in Hard Times, we broke down the legal definition of heart and how to apply it when discerning the Word of Yah. (See what I mean? Already referencing it so if you haven’t read this series first, please start reading here). Here in verse 15, Yahusha (who is Christ Jesus) is now talking about how not only is the heart where understanding takes place, but this understanding of the Word in the heart is necessary for conversion. Once this happens, this leads to healing by Yeshua. So not only does the Word of Yah have the capacity and ability, to heal you, but also the desire to heal.
The word “should heal” here, according to the Blue Letter Bible App, is the Greek word ‘iáomai’ or ‘to make whole.’ Another definition of the word is ‘to free from errors and sins, to bring about (one’s) salvation’ [1]. Now we know, as believers, that Christ was the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 61, that when he said the Spirit of the LORD would be upon Him to “heal the brokenhearted,” give sight back to the blind, and deliver the oppressed it was Yahusha he was prophesying about (Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:18). Now that we get that He was sent for the purpose of doing these things, for the next part of the message, we’re gonna bring the focus back to the portion of Matthew that says, “should be converted.”
I know you’re wondering already what this has to do with your calling. Well, to put it plainly: everything. Identifying what your calling is is pretty easy once we get to the root of these two founding scriptures. I mean it. But there’s something that holds us back from operating in our God given purposes, and we’re gonna dive into that as we explore what Yahusha was talking about with this “conversion.”
THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT HOLDS YOU BACK FROM IDENTIFYING YOUR CALLING FROM GOD
Now the Greek word for this phrase “should be converted” in the Strong’s is ‘epistrephō,’ and it means a few things relevant to this post today. One, which is the most powerful by far, is, “to turn to the worship of the true God” [2]. Another is to, “cause to return; to bring back to the love and obedience of God” [3]. But lastly, as it is our focus here, it’s also defined to mean, “to love wisdom and righteousness” [4].
So hold. Proverbs 9:10, to bounce you around a little bit with some cross referencing, tells us that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10 NIV). Many times, we’re looking in the Bible to find solutions to our problems or to see how the Most High would best fit in our lives or situation. We’re looking for our purpose, or calling, for example, and that’s not what this says to do. So many Christians miss the season Yah has them in, their assignment, their calling, alllllllll of that because when they open their Bibles, they’re focused on solutions to their problems and not getting to know Him.
This is the magical genie god that prosperity preachers push in their pulpits, so saints sit broke, confused, and isolated from the Elohim in their pews. This is also the methodology of Egyptian deity worship. They had a god for everything. They had a god for fertility, for harvest, for beauty, for rain. You want something, you go to that god that governs that thing and they’ll handle it. Same with the Greek, Norse, Celtic, Aztec, and Roman pantheons. Our God is not this way. So this is where the connect comes. To grasp the conversion we want to take place to receive healing from the Word of Yah (Yahusha being the Word made flesh), you’ve first got to understand that the place to start is the the “fear of the Lord” or the “reverence” of Him Proverbs tells us is the beginning of wisdom [5]. This “skilled understanding” or knowledge of Him should be our focus, this is what should be deposited in our hearts [6]. When you understand Yah’s nature, His laws, and why you should reverence Him, my friend, conversion or worship is the natural response. Not only this, but you are moved to obey him, because if you love Him, you’ll keep His commandments (John 14:15).
If your focus is just getting stuff from God, you won’t be able to receive that understanding of His nature and this is what the Pharisees missed. You’ll miss your moment. You’ll miss your calling. You’ll miss your purpose in life. They missed it. They weren’t serving the Most High, they were serving themselves and so were idolizing self. They weren’t concerned with understanding the Word, they were using it to parade around and look good to other believers, have status in their communities, and make others feel inferior to their false piety so that they could generate power over them. They weren’t righteous, saints. These were wicked, unrighteous men with the appearance of righteousness. And by understanding that, we’re going to go into my next point, which will bring clarity to that infernal question: what does God want me to do?
ANSWERING THE BIG QUESTION: WHAT DOES GOD WANT ME TO DO?
Righteousness, as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, is, “the state or quality of being righteous or just; conformity to the precepts of divine law or accepted standards of morality.” What does this mean when applied to Matthew 13:15? Christ is saying, when you hear the Word of Yah and get understanding of who He is from it, allowing this knowledge of Him to take root in your heart, the natural response to getting to know Him is to worship Him and keep His laws because then, He should heal you. He said, as a reminder, He came to heal the brokenhearted back in Proverbs. Without understanding His purpose of doing this, this is exactly where false doctrine in the prosperity gospel will mess you all the way up.
The heart, as we once again discussed in How to Be Grateful in Hard Times: Part II, is, “the centre of the vital or life maintaining functions of the body” [7]. If He’s healing the brokenhearted, this means there’s something off about your heart. He’s correcting what is causing dysfunction in your life because you are the Body of Yahusha HaMashiach. As Believers, we are the Body of Christ and so Him being the head of the Body, He’s got to deal with it (1 Corinthians 12:27 NIV). He desires to deal with it, but He’s only healing His Body.
Listen, you need to get this: you’re looking for your purpose in Christ and you’re not living completely submitted as a member of His Body. That and you don’t recognize nor understand that not everybody is a child of the Most High Yah. People want to still live in sin and then say that you’re judging them and that they’re God’s child. We all sin, we all fall short of the glory of Yah, but we’re not called to make sin a lifestyle. It is a lie, this do as thou wilt and you’re forgiven because you’re saved mentality, and it’s perpetuated by the feel good doctrine of the prophets of Baal leading the lost straight to hell. There’s a reason you need to be converted first. There’s a reason He said, if they get this understanding of the Word of Yah deep down in their hearts, they’ll be converted, and I’ll go to work in their lives. That’s healing. I’ll make their crooked ways straight, that’s healing. I’ll correct them so that they’re acceptable to the Most High, that’s healing. And when you’re healed, when you’re converted, when you can see and hear, you’ll know your purpose. Peter did. John did. They found out because they spent time with Christ Jesus. It was the natural response, beloved, to getting to know who the Elohim truly is. Their purpose revealed itself along the journey.
THIS ONE THING IS THE #1 ENEMY TO KNOWING WHAT YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE IS AS A BELIEVER
What’s holding you back from being able to recognize your calling from God is the same sin that had the Pharisees and Sadducees in a vice grip. When I mentioned the Pharisees worshipped the god of self, that’s because self-love is the #1 marketing gimmick of Satan. It’s flashy, it makes you go oooo and ahhhh and it works. It sells, really, because that’s what the kingdom of darkness preaches and it’s got so many believers and non-believers in a chokehold. “Don’t love God,” they say, “love YOU.” It’s the culture of today just as it was the culture of the ancient Egyptians, of the Greeks, of the Romans, and all the others who worshipped their false gods and who are no longer in thriving existence because of it.
Yahusha called them out on this, remember? What did Christ call them? He called the Pharisees children of the devil i.e. Satan (John 8:44). Now listen: I told you not everyone is a child of God and I’m here to prove it with His Word.
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
John 8:44 NIV
Right there, we see in plain view, that there are therefore two groups of children. The important part of why I’m referencing this, showing you this isn’t just so that you aren’t deceived, but it’s to remind you that Christ Himself said He’s not praying for everybody, He is not praying for the world. He’s praying for the ones the Father has given to Him (John 17:9-10). He’s the Word. Hear me: He’s praying for the ones God has given the Word. He’s praying for those that have eyes to see and ears to hear the Word. Get this. You have to recognize that this is an Elohim who knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10 NIV), so He doesn’t need to waste time with unbelievers He knows are never going to choose Him. He’s an intentional God, He's a strategic God, He’s an Almighty God. So even if you’re currently lost and reading this in a stage of your life where you’re lukewarm or half in and half out for Yah, Yahusha HaMashiach is praying for you, but not for that friend of yours whose father is the devil who will never submit to Him and is purely on assignment to drag you to hell with them. Christ is concerned with His Body, Yah’s children, those who have died to self and were born again, who continue to deny their flesh after giving their lives to Christ, the ones adopted into His sheepfold (Ephesians 1:5, Galatians 4:5-7) through Yahusha HaMashiach. Through the Word of God!
We discussed this as the founding scripture of How to Be Grateful in Hard Times Part I, II, and III. If you aren’t reading or listening to the Word of God, allowing it to permeate into your heart, let it transform your habits so that you are obeying His laws and commandments, you are not worshipping Yahweh the way He desires to be worshipped, and you don’t know Him. Period. Therefore, Christ (aka the Word of Yah) is not fully at work in your life. You will be like the foolish virgins who are not ready when Christ comes to move you into deeper fellowship with Him and that door and that access to Him will be closed to you, because no one gets to the Father, but by Christ Jesus (Matthew 25:1-13, John 14:6 NIV).
When you get this, beloved, you then receive the revelation that the Word of Yah is the key that unlocks everything in your life. The knowledge of the Holy One of Israel is all you need to know what your purpose is because in that intimate relationship you’ll develop with Him, He’ll reveal it to you Himself.
Getting to Know God is the Ultimate Goal and Calling for Christians
There’s your answer, my dear friend. There it is in the King’s English: the purpose of your life, your God given calling, is to first get to know Him. To be in relationship with Him. It’s getting this understanding of who He is through the Word of Yah that will unlock the doors to what He has for you. This is why He says in Jeremiah 29:11 NIV that He has plans for you and He knows them. The only way you’re going to find out is if you spend time with Him. Period.
Sin, honestly, is what keeps us from wanting to do that. We don’t want to get to know God because we don’t want to have to commit to what He requires of us when we decide to pursue Him. Tell me I’m wrong. You know it’s true. It’s so much easier to give into the temptations of unbelief and living life on your own terms than picking up that book, getting to know the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, and deciding that you’re going to live life His way and on His terms. It just is. But there’s victory in doing the latter than going the broad way of the former path. And in the next part of our series, we’re going to explore how Yahweh has already given us the key tool in overcoming that desire not to truly believe in His Word in the Bible. And it’s gonna be good, so good, you’re gonna want to dive right into it.
