August 2024 Bible Reading Plan
Exploring Biblical History in Bible Study
One of my favourite things is looking at historical truths and finding how they line up with the timelines we’re given in the Bible. It’s one of the things that made my journey of reading the Word and learning it waaaay more fun. By taking into consideration what historical texts may say about Pontius Pilate, for example, and comparing this information to what we see of him in the Gospels, you can get a bigger picture of the political climate and spiritual climate that ultimately affected the lives of our biblical ancestors.
So when the Lord placed it on me to restart (as I had created a couple when I first launched this blog back in February, yet became quickly overwhelmed) monthly bible reading plans, I was realllyyy excited when He led me to focusing on making known the spiritual, geographical, and political truths of Christian history throughout the study guide.
AUGUST'S BIBLE READING PLAN
This month, the scriptures of study are focusing on detoxing spiritually. It’s really important to take time, in different seasons in our lives, to assess whether or not we’ve wandered from God, and if so? To come back to Him. These scriptures will help you focus on covenant with Him, what He requires of us as believers, and remind you to put Him first in all areas of your life. Especially the ones that we don’t want to give Him control of.
ON THIS DAY IN CHRISTIAN HISTORY
Like I said, being the history nerd I am, I’m really excited to dive into brief history lessons throughout this month’s plan. The Lord made it very clear to me that sometimes, just like our biblical ancestors, we can be prone to forgetting His mercy and goodness and wander away into spiritual adultery and sin (Deuteronomy 9:7-8, 1 Kings 2:1-4, Nehemiah 9:16, Jeremiah 7:22-26). I believe it’s important, therefore, to remind ourselves of what those before us went through so that we may receive the Gospel of Yeshua HaMashiach. Really important.
This month’s calendar focuses on the persecution of the church. A lot of prosperity gospel, if you’re familiar, will have you deceived into believing that things will go well for you if you sow this seed (usually money) or if you have enough faith for genie!God to bless you in whatever you ask (lieeeeesss.) So for a quick reality check, a few examples of what you’ll find on this month’s bible reading plan calendar are:
The (possible) day Herod Agrippa I, the king who ordered the death of the James the Apostle, died.
The day Peter Ambuofa of Malu'u is baptized, an early Christian convert who led more than 200 people to Christ in spite of his own countrymen attempting to kill him.
The day the Roman Empire set the Second Temple of Jerusalem on fire.
The day Robert Morrison died, the man responsible for translating the Bible into Chinese.
Learning about our biblical ancestors beyond what’s recorded of the early church in the New Testament can give us insight not only into the book of Revelation, but can also show us the truth about what it costs you to pick up your cross and follow Yeshua.
Take this plan, enjoy your spiritual detox prompts, and take some time to look up more information on the cliff notes given about what happened this month in Christian history.
